DD News to have new news programme in Sanskrit
New Delhi, May 10
Doordarshan will soon launch a Sanskrit news programme on weekends — a long-standing demand from some sections its viewers.
The half hour news broadcast is expected to go on air by the end of June or the beginning of July.
"DD News already has a five-minute Sanskrit news bulletin 'Varta' which is telecast at 6.55 everyday. However, it was felt that five minutes is not adequate and we are looking at creating a half and hour programme for weekends, although a slot has yet to be decided," Doordarshan Director General (News) Akshay Kumar Rout said.
The programme will have news, reportage, features and panel discussions in Sanskrit. The public service boardcaster will decide on having more programmes in Sanskrit based on the response its bulletin garners.
Currently, however, the channel’s focus is on the content and getting the ‘right human resource’ for the programme.
Officials said that the news presenters and staff that help producing the early morning Sanskrit bulletin will not be enough for the new show. The channel, therefore, will recruit more people to handle the new show.
"We also propose to get in touch with academic institutions and other organisations that can help us in creating the best quality content in Sanskrit," Rout said. — PTI
