Delhi for free Metro, bus ride for women
New Delhi, June 3
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said his government proposes to make Metro and bus travel free for women in the national capital, in the hope that the higher use of public transport will improve women’s safety.
The proposal will be implemented within two to three months, he said.
The Assembly elections are scheduled early next year and the BJP dismissed the proposal as a gimmick.
The CM said the government will bear the travel expenses. “For the remaining part of this financial year, the cost of this comes to Rs 700-800 crore,” he said.
Kejriwal said he has asked officials to study the proposal and also sought feedback from the public. He also said his government has passed a tender to install 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras across the city.
The CM said providing free ride facility to women will not cause congestion in the Metro. The Delhi government, he added, would bring 3,000 new buses on roads by September. — TNS
