Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Wednesday demanded an apology from Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for his “disgraceful” remarks on the Indian Army after the surgical strikes in PoK that he “made armed forces realise their power.”

“Mr Parrikar withdraw your statement and apologise to the Indian Army. No Defence Minister of India has made such a disgraceful statement,” Singh said on Twitter.

“Does he mean that before he became Defence Minister, Army didn’t know what they stood for? Is he aware of the glorious history of our Army?” Singh said.

“Disgraceful Comment of Manohar Parikar on Indian Army! ...Condemn his statement against Indian Army,” the Congress general secretary tweeted.

Speaking on the surgical strikes by the Indian Army in PoK, Parikar last week said, “Lord Hanuman did not know of his powers before going to Lanka. Similarly, I made our armed forces realise their power...On the orders of Modiji, the Army did a great job.”

Singh was himself under attack for his remarks raising doubts over the surgical strikes.

Congress had steered clear of any action against him.

The party had, however, totally dissociated itself from Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam’s remarks suggesting the surgical strikes as “fake” and had said that it had taken a serious note of the comment. — PTI
