Fast-track court to try lynching case

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has announced that the state government is setting up a fast-track court at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong hill district to try the accused in the June 8 lynching case.

Two youths from Guwahati — Nilotpol Das and Abhijit Nath — were beaten to death at Panjuri in Dokmoka on June 8. Two more persons were arrested in connection with case on Friday, taking the number of arrested to 30. Sonowal has said, “The culprits should get exemplary punishment as soon as possible. That is what the people of Assam want. So, we will give priority to the fact that the trial should take place in a fast-track court.” Meanwhile, taking a suo moto cognisance on the issue that has triggered protests in the state, the Assam Human Rights Commission has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the lynching incident. The panel had sent a team to Karbi Anglong for an on-the-spot inquiry. — TNS
