Four get capital punishment for Rampur CRPF camp attack
Lucknow, November 2
A Rampur court today awarded capital punishment to four of the six convicted in the 2008 attack on a CRPF Group Centre in Rampur.
The Rampur court of Additional District Judge (III) Sanjay Kumar Singh today announced the punishment after convicting them on Friday.
Mohammad Farooque and Imran Shahzaad who were given capital punishment are from Pakistan. Others are Sabauddin of Madhubani (Bihar) and Mohammad Sharif of Khajuria (Rampur).
The fifth convict Jang Bahadur of Moradabad was awarded life term while the sixth convict Arshad Ahmad Ansari of Goregaon, Mumbai, was given 10-year jail.
The court did not find any evidence against two more persons — Kausar Khan Farooqui of Pratapgarh and Gulab Khan of Bareilly. Hence, they have been acquitted and would be released soon.
On the intervening night of December 31, 2007, and January 1, 2008, the CRPF Group Centre in Rampur was attacked by the militants, claiming the lives of seven personnel and a rickshaw-puller. The police had arrested the eight accused and filed a chargesheet against them. — TNS
