Twentysix-year-old Ganga Kumari of Jakhari village in Jalore district became the first transgender to be inducted into the Rajasthan Police following a High Court order.
The Rajasthan High Court on Monday directed the police department to appoint Ganga Kumari a constable in six weeks, after officials denied her the post due to her gender. Justice Dinesh Mehta ordered to treat her appointment with retrospective effect.
Ganga’s lawyer Rituraj Singh Rathore said a two-year legal battle has finally borne fruit for Ganga. We moved the HC after police officials delayed decision on Ganga’s appointment. Despite passing the examination, Ganga was not appointed constable.
Ganga was selected in the police recruitment examinations for constables in 2013. However her appointment was held up following a medical test.
