NEW DELHI: Distinguished public servant Gurbachan Jagat has joined as a trustee of The Tribune.

Distinguished public servant Gurbachan Jagat has joined as a trustee of The Tribune. He was formally inducted into the Tribune Trust and attended its first meeting here today. The other trustees include its President, Justice SS Sodhi, NN Vohra, Lt Gen SS Mehta (retd) and Naresh Mohan.

A 1966-batch Punjab-cadre Indian Police Service officer, Gurbachan Jagat served in various capacities in the state till 1997 when he was chosen to head the Jammu and Kashmir Police to rebuild the force. He later became the Director General of the Border Security Force before retiring in 2002.

A Masters in English literature from Panjab University, Chandigarh, he is a voracious reader and takes a keen interest in rural affairs.

Between 2002 and 2007, Jagat served in the Union Public Service Commission first as its member and later as the Chairman. In 2008, he was appointed Governor of Manipur and completed his term in 2013.

He was conferred with a Padma Shri in 1987, and is also a recipient of several service medals, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (1992) and Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (1982), J&K Government’s “The Police Officer of the Year” (2001), Pachchimi Star, Sangram Medal, Special Duty Medal (Punjab and J&K), Aantrik Seva Suraksha Medal, and Operation Rakshak and Operation Vijay Medals.
