India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) on reducing emissions, which it will submit on October 1, the deadline for nations to submit their commitments, will be a reflection of the country’s policies and programmes on the critical issue.
They will be declared in New Delhi the next day to coincide with October 2 — the Gandhi Jayanti.
India is one of the most vulnerable countries facing adverse impact of climate change.
Officials say India’s INDCs will be fair and ambitious. They will showcase strategies and initiatives in sectors such as agriculture, water and health along with programmes and policies for coastal regions and islands for disaster management, protecting biodiversity and Himalayan ecosystem and ensuring rural livelihood security.
INDCs are voluntary pledges that countries would take to cut carbon emissions ahead of Conference of Parties (CoP) in Paris.
Considering that finance and technology transfer will be fundamental to the success of the crucial CoP-21 in Paris, scheduled for later this year, India will also project its financial and technology transfer requirements and capacity building needs for implementation of action on adaptation and mitigation, it is learnt.
The objective of the Paris conference is to achieve a binding and universal agreement on climate from all nations of the world. There is considerable scepticism over its outcome unless developed nations give a commitment of finance and technology transfer — the requisites for poor and developing countries to fulfil any commitment.
