Passengers flying on two private airlines, IndiGo and GoAir, faced problems across the country as the carriers together cancelled 70 flights today, a day after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) grounded their 11 planes following malfunctioning of engines.

While IndiGo cancelled 50 flights, GoAir called off 20. The airlines said the affected passengers would be “accommodated in other aircraft, but there will be a change in their schedule”, which irked the passengers. The cancelled flights were from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Patna, Srinagar, Bhubaneswar, Amritsar, Srinagar and Guwahati, among other routes.

The DGCA had yesterday grounded eight A320 neo planes of IndiGo and three of GoAir following three incidents of mid-air engine failure in less than a month. Officials of the airlines said the cancellations would continue and there may be some relief only after the new schedule began from March 25. A statement from Pratt and Whitney said, “We are working with our customers to minimise disruption.” — TNS
