Amritsar, November 23
It is a proud moment for the Randhawa family which is overjoyed at Nikki Haley’s elevation.
Kanwaljit Singh Randhawa (70), Nikki’s cousin, who retired as a lecturer and lives in Verka, has been in regular touch with Nikki’s father Ajit Singh Randhawa.
“Nikki has made us all proud. It is a great moment for the family. I wanted to speak to Nikki, but she speaks English with an American accent which is difficult for us to understand. But we converse with her father, who is our paternal uncle, in Punjabi. Today, we congratulated each other over Nikki’s success,” he said, adding that Nikki had achieved the position owing to her hard work and intelligence.
Hailing from the non-descript Pandori Ran Singh village in Tarn Taran, Ajit Singh moved to Amritsar in the early 60s.
Later, he moved to Canada to pursue his PhD and from there to America in 1964.
Nikki visited Amritsar for the first time in 2014 after she became South Carolina Governor. “Nikki was born and brought up in America. On her first visit to Amritsar, she intended to visit her ancestral village, but dropped the idea due to security reasons,” he said.
The Randhawas are planning to visit their kin in April-May next year.
