Jailed MLA Ansari suffers heart attack

Lucknow, January 9

Don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau, suffered a massive heart attack in Banda jail on Tuesday. His wife Afshan Ansari, who was visiting him in jail, also reportedly suffered a heart attack on seeing her husband’s condition.

Relatives, however, alleged that the two had been served tea spiked with poison. Both were rushed to the Banda district hospital in a serious condition from where they were referred to Lucknow’s super-speciality Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute.

According to Banda Jail Superintendent’s report, Afshan had come to meet him at the jail this morning. While talking to her, Mukhtar felt uneasy and started sweating. Seeing his condition, his wife lost consciousness. Around 12.40 pm, on the advice of the jail doctor, the undertrial MLA and his wife were rushed to the emergency wing of the Banda district hospital in an unconscious state, the report said.

Principal Secretary Home Arvind Kumar said he had asked for a joint report from the Banda DM and SP. The MLA is the prime accused in the 2005 murder of BJP MLA Krishnanad Rai. — TNS
