New Delhi, May 22
President Pranab Mukherjee today appointed Kiran Bedi as the new Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Puducherry. A Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said the appointment would come into force from the time she assumed the office.
At present, Lt Gen AK Singh (retd) holds the charge in addition to being Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was given the charge in July 2014 after the Narendra Modi government removed Virendra Kataria, former Punjab Congress chief, from the post. The appointment came three days after the Assembly elections concluded, in which the Congress-DMK alliance won a majority in the 30-member state Assembly.
