New Delhi, December 10

Lok Sabha passed the 126th Constitution Amendment Bill with over two thirds majority to extend existing reservation of seats in Parliament and state legislatures for members of SC and ST community by another 10 years.

However, no such extension has been given yet for members of Anglo-Indian community. Recent reports of the central government’s decision to do away with reservation for Anglo-Indians in Parliament and state legislatures have drawn protests from the community.

An Anglo-Indian is one of mixed cultural descent— the term is applied to a person with Indian and, on the paternal side, European heritage but who is a native of India. Some estimates say some 1 lakh Anglo-Indians live in India.
