Patna: A man allegedly burnt his brother, sister-in-law and two nieces to death over an alleged property dispute at Kaundi village in Katihar, Bihar, on Monday.
The police have sent the bodies for postmortem.
The dead were identified as Kedar Singh (46), his wife Pratima Devi (42), and their two daughters, Soni Kumar (17) and Dimpal Kumari (15).
The couple’s son Laxaman Kumar Singh managed to escape from the tragic site as he was sleeping in another room.
Kedar’s younger brother, Manoj Kumar who is absconding, allegedly poured petrol in the room where the victims were sleeping before bolting the door from outside.
Katihar superintendent of police Siddharth Mohan Jain, said: “Four persons of a family were burnt to death by Manoj, who is absconding after the incident. Raids are being conducted to nab him. A case in this connection has been lodged.”
Laxaman said: “My mother and sisters died at the spot but my father took his last breadth at Katihar Medical College and Hospital in Katihar district town today. My uncle committed a sin of setting my parents and sisters on fire while he had warned us of dire consequences on Sunday evening.”
Manoj wanted to sell a piece of land that his elder brother Kedar protested. He eventually failed to sell the land as the property was yet to be divided.
