Marathi film ''Court'' is India''s entry to the Oscars
New Delhi, September 23
First-time director Chaitanya Tamhanhe's Marathi film ‘Court’ was on Monday chosen as India's official entry to the 88th Academy Awards.
Supran Sen, secretary general of the Film Federation of India, which selects the country's official entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the prestigious Oscars, confirmed the development.
Veteran actor-filmmaker Amol Palekar was heading the jury for choosing the entry this year.
‘Court’ is a commentary on the state of Indian Judiciary through the eyes of an aging folk singer Narayan Kamble, played by Vira Sathidar, who is tried for abetting suicide. It won the National Award for Best Feature Film in 2015, and also got 17 international honours after it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last year.
The movoe loosely draws inspiration from the story of activist and protest singer of Jharkhand Jiten Maradi, who was accused of being involved in the 2007 Chikari massacre case, in which former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi's son was among 20 villagers killed. Marandi was sentenced to death but released in 2011on court's orders — IANS
