As the government today released the list of police medals to be awarded on Independence Day, terror-inflicted Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Naxal-affected Andhra Pradesh bagged the maximum bravery awards among 990 personnel selected.

Among the Central forces, the CRPF topped the list with 131, while the BSF followed with 67 medals. The police medals are awarded in four categories — President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPMDS) and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS).

There is a quantum jump in the number of awards for bravery this Independence Day (190), as for Republic Day the tally was at 100, a senior Ministry of Home Affairs official said. As per the MHA list, 93 and 706 police personnel will receive PPMDS and PMMS, respectively.

Among the PMG awardees, the CRPF topped the count with 53 personnel followed by Andhra Pradesh (52) and J&K (25). Besides, 17 and 12 police personnel from Naxal-hit Odisha and Maharashtra, too, have been selected for PMG.

From the North-East, police personnel of Meghalaya only received 17 PMG,  while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura have drawn a blank in the gallantry categories.
