MNF wins AMC polls, NDA draws blank

Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), won the election to the 19-seat Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) held yesterday by bagging 11 seats, state election commission officials today said.

While the NDA, pre-poll alliance of the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and the BJP, which contested 15 seats did not win even a single seat, the ruling Congress and the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) combine, which contested all the seats won eight seats.

The MNF went alone in the civic polls.

Of the 19 seats in the AMC, six seats were reserved for women and the Congress- MPC combine female candidates bagged five reserved seats while only one MNF women candidate was elected.

Meanwhile, the poll turnout in the election to the 25-member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) held yesterday was 85.22 per cent, state election commission officials said.

The officials said that 74 candidates were in the fray for the LADC polls with both the ruling Congress and the MNF contesting all the seats.

Counting of votes for the LADC polls would be conducted at Lawngtlai town tomorrow.

LADC is the largest autonomous district council among the three district councils constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in Mizoram. —PTI
