Mulayam to campaign for brother Shivpal first, Akhilesh later

Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav has said that he would first campaign for his brother Shivpal Yadav before doing the same for his son, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, days after he vowed he would not campaign for the party after its alliance with the Congress.

“I will start my campaigning from Jaswantnagar on February 9 for Shivpal. I will campaign for Akhilesh later,” Mulayam said on Friday, adding the latter was his “son after all”.

Shivpal Yadav announced on January 31 that he was forming a new political party after elections results are announced on March 11, a new turn to the political drama that had been playing out in the party since October, gtrHe has also announced that he would campaign for those people who have been denied tickets by Akhilesh Yadav, who is the party’s national president.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had announced that he would not campaign for Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance on January 30 — a development that came within hours of a joint press briefing and a road show by leaders of the two parties, the chief minister and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

The senior Yadav has been against an alliance with the Congress since his son hinted it was possible.

Voting in Uttar Pradesh will be done in seven phases — February 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, March 4 and 8. Votes will be counted on March 11. — ANI
