Special Judge OP Saini also acquitted all three companies allegedly involved in the case that politically damaged the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh.
Those acquitted also included accused Shahid Balwa and Essar top executives Ravikant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia.
“It sounded like music to my ears,” said advocate Vijay Agrawal who represented Balwa in the case about the verdict.
After the acquittal verdict, supporters of the accused were seen waving placards of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ and bursting crackers outside the Patiala House Court in the National Capital.
Raja was accused of criminal conspiracy and corruption along with certain bureaucrats and telecom companies in the grant of 122 2G spectrum licences which were cancelled by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2012.
However, Special CBI Court Judge OP Saini held that the prosecution miserably failed to prove the criminal charges against the accused.
“I have no hesitation in holding that the prosecution has miserably failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt,” Saini said, acquitting all the accused.
In its chargesheet filed in April 2011 against Raja and other accused, the CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of 122 licences for 2G spectrum.
