Mumbai, September 22
Hindi film “Newton”, a black comedy on the foibles of democracy, has been chosen to represent India in the Best Foreign Language category at the 90th Academy Awards next year, the Film Federation of India announced today.
The movie, which released commercially across the country today, is Amit Masurkar’s second directorial venture and features Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Raghubir Yadav, Anjali Patil and Sanjay Mishra.

It was the unanimous choice of FFI’s selection committee, headed by Telugu producer CV Reddy.
“‘Newton’ has been selected as India’s entry to the Oscars. It was unanimously chosen from 26 entries this year,” said FFI secretary general Supran Sen.
Tripathi plays a cynical Army officer and Rao an earnest poll officer determined to hold elections in a Chhattisgarh village despite threat of Naxalite violence.
The 90th Academy Awards will be held on March 4, 2018, in Los Angeles. — PTI
