A school in Navi Mumbai has denied admission to a 7-year-old child on the ground that he had a single mother, drawing outrage from Twitter.
A video that went viral showed Sujata Mohite, a 27-year-old mother, speaking to Saira Kennedy, principal of Vashi’s St Lawrence School. Kennedy is heard saying in the video that the school does not admit children of single parents because they are “difficult to handle”.
Mohite is a divorced single parent who lives with her son.
A video of the incident was shared under the username ‘Khusboo’, with the words: “Principal of St Lawrence high school in Vashi Navi Mumbai is denying to take admission for single parent students. Does Principal have same rules for our Army kids??? Raise your voice against such rules by school”.

Irani replied saying she had already alerted the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
“Have informed @HRDMinistry Secretary School Education Smt Reena Ray to look into the issue,” her tweet in reply to Jotwani’s read.
