Despite spending over Rs 47,000 crore for the construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada, farmers have not been benefitted in Gujarat because of the state government's failure to construct branch canals to take the waters to the fields.
Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma stated this in the state Assembly while replying to a question on behalf of Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, who handles the Narmada portfolio. Chudasma was earlier the chairman of the Narmada Development Corporation when he was not a minister.
Chudasma said while the work on the 458-km main canal had almost been completed, canals of more than 48,000 km are yet to be constructed.
