"I worked wid Mother Teresa for a few months at Nirmal Hriday ashram in Kolkata. She was a noble soul. Pl spare her," Kejriwal tweeted.

Addressing a function in Bharatpur in Rajasthan on Monday, Bhagwat said Mother Teresa's service to the poor was aimed at converting them to Christianity.

"People like Mother Teresa did good work and service. But the aim was to convert the poor to Christianity. This kind of service is devalued if conversions are done in the name of service or work," he said.

His comments triggered a controversy. However, the RSS chief said the statement was misattributed.

Meanwhile, the minorities panel disapproved of the controversial remarks and called for restraint during discussion or debate regarding personalities wholly involved in selfless social service.

Without naming Bhagwat, the National Commission for Minorities, in a resolution adopted on Tuesday, said it was "deeply saddened" by remarks highlighted by the media casting aspersions on the activities of the late Mother Teresa.

“The lifelong service and selfless love for her fellow humans exhibited by her has very few parallels in history.

There have never been questions raised about religious bias in her humanitarian work," the five-member Commission after passing the resolution in a meeting, said.

Further, it added that the Commission would request all concerned to exercise utmost restriant during discussion or debate regarding personalities wholly involved in selfless social service.

"Harsh and unfounded criticism needlessly hurts the feelings of large sections of the society and therefore is avoidable," it said in the resolution. — IANS/ PTI
