Russian woman injured in acid attack in Varanasi

A 23-year-old Russian national was today injured in an acid attack allegedly by her boyfriend following a quarrel between them.

The woman was rushed to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of BHU, where she is undergoing treatment for injuries on her body and face, Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhary said, adding the accused, Siddharth, is absconding.

The incident occurred in Nand Nagar Colony in Lanka police station area, where the woman was living as a paying guest in a house for past few months, he said.

During her stay at the house, she came close to the landlord's son Siddharth, who is a student of music at Banaras Hindu University, the SSP said.

"He was unhappy over the decision of the woman to return to Russia. They had a quarrel over the issue after which Siddharth threw acid on her body," said Kulhary.

Siddharth's mother heard the woman's cries and rushed her to the hospital.

An FIR has been registered and further investigation into the case is on, said Kulhary. — PTI
