SC slams AP, Telangana for using teachers as netas’ PAs

The Supreme Court on Wednesday passed an order instantly ending the tenures of teachers working as personal secretaries or assistants (PSs/Pas) to lawmakers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

A Bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and C Nagappan issued the directive after taking strong exception to the two states misusing school teachers as PAs by sending them on deputation.

It rejected the teachers’ plea for letting them continue in their present position till the end of the ongoing academic session in June 2017 as their children were studying in schools at places where they were posted.

However, the court directed the two state governments to ensure that the affected students got admission midway through the academic session.

The teachers would cease to function as PAs/PSs forthwith, while the authorities would issue necessary orders within a week for sending them back to teaching. The teachers would have to resume their duty in schools in three weeks, the apex court said.

The SC also expressed shock over the misuse of college professors by making them work as PAs/PSs to ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and MLAs holding other positions, particularly in Telangana.

The Bench said it would deal with this issue next week.
