Six convicted in Kamduni gang rape and murder case

Six people were convicted on Thursday for raping and murdering a 21-year-old woman in June 2013.

Saiful Ali, Ansar Ali and Aminul Ali were held guilty of gangrape and murder as Additional City and Sessions Judge Sanchita Kar announced her verdict to a packed courtroom. Imanul Islam, Aminul Islam and Bhola Naskar were held guilty of gang rape, criminal conspiracy, and hiding evidence.

Saiful Ali, who had cornered the girl and forcibly taken her to a farmhouse, was also found guilty of wrongful confinement.

The trial court, however, acquitted two people.

Arguments for punishments will begin on Friday.

Saiful Ali, Ansar Ali and Aminul Ali face death penalty, a life sentence or, at the very least, jail for at least 20 years.

Another accused, Gopal Naskar, died in August 2015 while the case was still being tried.

The victim walking back home on a lonely road after a bus dropped her in Kamduni some 50 km from Kolkata on June 7, 2013 when she was forcibly taken a farm, gang raped and murdered.

Her mutilated body was found the next morning in a corner of the farm. — PTI
