New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi is doing well after a minor treatment procedure she underwent on Wednesday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She was admitted for the procedure as previously decided by her doctors and is doing well. A statement from the hospital said, “Sonia Gandhi is doing well and is undergoing physiotherapy and rehabilitation.” TNS
FIR against MLA for assault
Mumbai: The police on Thursday filed an FIR against NCP MLA from Karjat Suresh Lad for allegedly slapping a Deputy Collector in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. “The FIR has been filed against Lad under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 363 (kidnapping), 332 (voluntary causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 323 (voluntary causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of the IPC,” a police officer from Karjat police station said. Deputy Collector (land acquisition) Abhay Kargutkar, in his complaint to police, has alleged that Lad caught him by the collar and beat him up. PTI
Gujarat police officer discharged in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case
Mumbai: A special CBI court on Thursday discharged senior Gujarat Police officer Narendra K Amin in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter cases. Discharging Amin, Special CBI Judge MB Gosavi observed there was no sufficient evidence against him. According to the CBI, the doctor-turned-policeman, who is at present serving as the SP, Mahisagar district in Gujarat, was involved in the conspiracy. The court has so far discharged BJP president Amit Shah, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria, Rajasthan-based businessman Vimal Patni, former Gujarat Police chief PC Pande, Additional Director General of Police Geeta Johri, Gujarat Police officer Abhay Chudasama, besides Yashpal Chudasama and Ajay Patel, both senior office-bearers of the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank. Five die in Mumbai car crash
Mumbai: Five youths, including a woman, were killed when the Honda City car they were travelling in crashed into a tree at high speed on the Western Express Highway on Thursday morning, the police said. They were going towards South Mumbai from the suburbs when the rear tyre of car hit the divider on a service road and the vehicle spun out of control. TNS
Bihar hooch tragedy toll 16
Patna: The number of persons who lost their lives in the alleged hooch tragedy in Bihar’s Gopalganj district has reached 16. Two more persons died at Patna Medical College and Hospital on Thursday, while some more remain in a critical condition. District Magistrate Rahul Kumar said: “At least 16 persons have died in the incident so far and some more are battling for life in the hospital.” CM Nitish Kumar said: “Personally, I feel that so many deaths might have been due to spurious liquor, but the fact is yet to be determined by test reports.” TNS
UP seminary issues fatwa against Saeed
Bareilly (UP): Islamic seminary of Barelvi sect on Thursday issued a ‘fatwa’ (edict) against Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed declaring him anti-Islamic. The ‘fatwa’ was issued against the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief by Mufti Mohammed Saleem Barelvi, an Islamic seminary in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. It dubbed Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Toiba who carries a $10 million bounty on his head, as “outcast” from Islam and declared those following him or considering as Muslim as “illegal”. PTI
PM crossed ‘red line’ on Balochistan: Pak
Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi crossed the “red line” by talking about Balochistan and asserted that it will “forcefully” raise the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly session next month. “The Prime Minister strongly pleaded the case of Kashmir during General Assembly session last year and we will again forcefully raise the issue,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said. Zakaria, in his weekly news briefing here, also took strong exception to the remarks by Prime Minister Modi on Balochistan. Prime Minister Modi had brought up Pakistani atrocities on people of Balochistan and PoK in his Independence Day speech. PTI
