Stampede: most of injured persons out of danger, say doctors

Most of the 39 persons who were injured in a stampede on the footbridge between Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations here on Friday morning are out of danger, authorities at the civic-run KEM Hospital said.

As many as 22 persons died in the deadly stampede.

"We have kept the injured persons under observation as a precautionary measure. Many have internal injuries," said Dr Avinash Supe, the hospital dean, adding that all the injured persons will be kept in the hospital overnight.

Some of them are in a state of shock as their relatives or friends perished in the tragedy. "They will need some time to come out of it," Dr Supe said.

Of the 39 injured admitted at KEM Hospital, two are in critical condition. One of them is on ventilator.

Barring these two, others are out of danger, said Dr Praveen Bangar, a senior medical officer.

"We carried out minor surgeries which were required urgently. Some of the injured persons have fractured bones, while others have difficulty breathing," he said.

Autopsies of the deceased were over and hospital authorities have started handing over bodies to the relatives. — PTI
