Mumbai, July 26
Singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi filed a complaint with the Mumbai police after being threatened with rape by abusive trolls after she tweeted against loud azaans emanating from a mosque near her home.
On July 23 the singer complained about loud azaan early in the morning. "Came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity," she tweeted.
Shortly afterwards she received several abusive tweets some of which threatened to rape her. "Look at these perverts! Feel sorry for my India — with this kind of attitude towards women its no wonder we've become the rape capital of d world," she replied.
After she tagged Mumbai's police commissioner and the cybercell of the Mumbai police, she was asked to come in and file a complaint.
The singer's also drew the ire of Muslim politicians Abu Azmi from the Samajwadi Party and Waris Pathan of AIMIM. "Actresses like Suchitra drink and dance till 2 am, put their arms around other strange men," Azmi was quoted as saying. Pathan, a well-known criminal lawyer and AIMIM MLA in the Maharashtra assembly, advised Suchitra to go and live in Nepal if disturbed by loud azaan.
Police said on Wednesday afternoon that efforts were being made to trace some of those who had posted abusive messages against Krishnamoorthi on Twitter.
