Chennai, August 1
Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed a unanimous resolution that the Madras High Court be renamed as the Tamil Nadu High Court and not as the High Court of Chennai, as proposed by Centre.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa moved the resolution in the AIADMK-dominated Assembly and it was welcomed by the main Opposition DMK, and others, including the Congress.
Within hours of the resolution, Jayalalithaa wrote to PM Narendra Modi, stating, “Based on overwhelming public opinion, the proposed change of name was debated… We passed a resolution to call upon the Centre to move necessary amendments to the Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha so as to rename the HC of Madras as the HC of Tamil Nadu.” — PTI
