Two rhino poachers were gunned down by a joint team of Special Task Force of Assam Police and forest personnel at Bura Pahar beat of Bagori range of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) early this morning.
A source in the KNP said a group of five armed poachers, suspected to have come from Karbi Anglong hills side, was challenged by the team of forest personnel in Bura Pahar range. In the ensuing encounter, two poachers were killed while three of them managed to flee.
One 303 rife, one .315 gun, 13 rounds of live ammunition, an axe, two bags and food items were recovered from the slain poachers.
Shortage of manpower has been a problem in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in tackling rhino poachers on the prowl.
