New Delhi, June 22
College students may soon be able to spend a semester or two at a foreign varsity under the amended UGC regulations that allow Indian universities to collaborate with foreign universities for specific degree programmes.
Indian universities can seek approval of the UGC that will vet the application and the MoU signed with the foreign educational institute. The application can be submitted online. Joint degrees will not be permitted. The regulations do not cover technical institutes. Undergraduate students can spend two semesters at the foreign varsity, while graduate students will get one semester at the varsity abroad.
“The degree will be given by the Indian educational institution. The certificate of the degree shall carry the name of the foreign educational institution. The transcripts to be used by the student will carry the name and the logo of the foreign institution in conjunction with the Indian institution and credits which have been earned for this particular course will be also recognised by the foreign educational institution under the MoU which is independently entered into by the Indian educational institution and the foreign institution,” said HRD Minister Smriti Irani. —TNS
