Ummar Khan, who was recently killed in an exchange of fire with alleged cow vigilantes at Alwar in Rajasthan, had a history of cow-smuggling and his accomplice Tahir, who was injured in the incident, was a habitual offender, the police said on Wednesday.
There were five-six cases against Tahir in Bharatpur and Dausa districts of Rajasthan and one case of cow-smuggling against Ummar at the Govindgarh police station of Alwar, which was registered in 2012, Alwar SP Rahul Prakash said.
The past crime records of another accomplice of the duo, Javed, were yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that the police in the neighbouring states were asked to check the criminal antecedents of the trio.
Meanwhile, an autopsy report revealed that Ummar had one bullet injury in the lower portion of his arm pit.
Deadlock over postmortem of Ummar ended this evening when his family members and relatives consented to the police and administration to perform it around 7.30 pm, CO-Alwar South Anil Beniwal, who is investigating the case, told The Tribune.
Autopsy on the 33-year-old’s body was carried by SMS Hospital doctors under police cover and later the body was handed over to the family members.
When asked whether the government agreed to pay any compensation or ex-gratia as the family members had demanded Rs 50 lakh, the CO said, prima facie the deceased and his two accomplices have got criminal record, and it was up to the government to decide it.
Earlier, Alwar SP Rahul Prakash ruled out of the involvement of any cow vigilantes in the case saying those involved in the crime were part of a gang of robbers who posed as ‘gaurakshaks’ and placed barricades on highways.
Engine of the van in which Ummar and two of his accomplices were travelling was found to be missing, and wheels and other parts were removed.
The van was placed on wooden slabs with nails on road, quoting their modus operandi, the SP said.
Once the commuters stopped, they were attacked and robbed, he added.
Two accused arrested for the alleged murder of Ummar, were today sent to three days police remand in Alwar.
The two accused, Bhagwan Singh and Ram Veer, were residents of Markpur near Govindgarh in Alwar district. — With PTI
