Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has undergone a “successful” kidney transplant in London. The kidney was donated by his wife Molly.

Expressing his happiness over the successful operation of his father in London on Sunday, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the transplanted kidney had started functioning and thanked people for “support and prayers”.

“Dad & mum's surgery was a success & the new kidney has started functioning. My family joins me in thanking all of U for yr support & prayers,” Omar tweeted today morning.

Earlier on Sunday, as both Farooq and his wife prepared for the surgery in London, Omar had tweeted: “My thoughts are with my parents as they both prepare for surgery today. I wish I could be there with them but that wasn't to be.”

On her twitter handle @hinnac, Farooq’s daughter Hinna tweeted: “My mother donated a kidney to my Dad today. Both surgeries were successful but it's still early days. Please keep them in your thoughts.”

Farooq’s ill health kept him away from campaigning for his party during the ongoing Assembly Elections in the state. His absence was also underlined by his son last month in Beerwah. “This election is made tougher by the fact that the National Conference star campaigner Dr Farooq Abdullah is not here. The responsibility of campaigning now rests on my shoulders. To that extent that we don’t have Farooq Sahab here, I think it is a tough election,” Omar had said in Beerwah, Budgam, on November 20 after filing his nomination.
