A woman was burnt to death in Bihar’s Muzzafarpur district on Saturday in a suspected case of dowry death, police said.

The victim, Khushbu Kumari, married Rajesh Kumar five years ago, and lived in Bochaha in Muzaffarpur with her in laws and the couple’s toddler children —a 3-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter. Police said her husband and his parents had been demanding Rs 5 lakh since their wedding.

Her parents paid Rs 1 lakh a year ago, but could not pay the rest, a police officer, D Upadhyay, said quoting the victim’s father Nand Kishore Yadav.

The suspects are currently absconding.

"After registering a case under anti-dowry act, we began conducting raids to find them,” said police officer. The case comes amid an anti-dowry campaign by the state government against dowry deaths in the state.
