Jammu, September 11

The National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) today staged a protest against the dilapidated condition of the city’s oldest cremation ground at Jogi Gate.

Protesters, led by NDPI state president Rajesh Gupta, raised slogans against the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and slammed the civic body for turning “indifferent” towards the problems being faced by the people who performed last rites and attended funeral processions.

Gupta, in his address, said the people had been facing problems while performing last rites because of the bad shape and dilapidated condition of the cremation ground.

He said he was surprised to hear that because of the rate conflict between the two JMC contractors, one got the stay from the court and halted the renovation work midway.

Gupta also lashed out at the political class of the region for deliberately ignoring the issue and appealed to the people to come forward and hold an hour-long demonstration tomorrow against the poor condition of the cremation ground.

On August 12, The Tribune had highlighted the issue of poor condition of the main cremation ground on the banks of river Tawi at Jogi Gate due to the official apathy and insensitive approach maintained by the JMC. The civic body had assured that the renovation work would start at the earliest, so far no action has been taken.
