Chandigarh, March 15
Victims of the 1984 riots and members of the Madanpur Cooperative Housing Building Society, Mohali, today alleged that office-bearers of the society were trying to sell the prime 85 acres, worth several crores, of the society to builders.
Addressing mediapersons, society members Jasbir Singh Kalsi and Iqbal Singh said the society, which had 1,083 members, was formed about 35 years ago. The society had bought 98.5 acres of agriculture land, out of which 15 acres were acquired by the Punjab Government for Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial at Chappar Chiri village.
They claimed that Manmeet Singh and Mandeep Singh, president and general secretary of the society, did not inform the members about the Rs 12-crore compensation paid by the state government. They alleged that the office-bearers had illegally constructed a building on a 400 square yard plot without getting the building plan sanctioned from the cooperative society.
They claimed that the members had paid Rs 8 to 10 lakh towards the cost of the land and its development. They said they had complained to the District Registrar, Cooperative Societies, and other officials concerned about it but nothing was done so far.
They said the office-bearers committee should be dissolved.
Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra said both the parties had come to her and she had already asked the District Registrar, Cooperative Societies, to submit a detailed report on the issue soon. She said further action would be taken after receiving the report.
