29K Canadian dollars seized at airport

The local police today seized 29,100 Canadian dollars (nearly Rs 15 lakh) from a Canada-based NRI on his arrival at the Chandigarh international airport in Mohali.

The man has been identified as Harmohan Grewal, who reached here after catching a connecting flight from Delhi on arrival from Canada, HS Bal, DSP at the airport police station, said.

“We received a tip-off that Grewal was carrying Canadian currency beyond the permissible limit. He had landed in Delhi on March 17 and today, he reached Chandigarh at 2.15 pm,” Bal said.

On being questioned, he confessed that he was carrying the foreign currency without declaring it to the authorities. The cash has been handed over to the Income Tax Department and investigations are on in the case, Bal said. According to the rules, an individual cannot carry more than 10,000 dollars.
