In order to make a clear assessment of the performance of students in the exams conducted by the Board of School Education, Haryana, the state education department has calculated the average score of pupils for the very first time.

The result, however, is nothing to cheer about: the average percentage of marks of students in the recently conducted Class X exams comes to just 45.37 per cent (third division).

The results aren’t much better for Class XII either —rounding up to about 53.56 per cent (second division) across the state.

The exercise has been conducted primarily to monitor targets and understand the quality of performance of students which is not reflected in the overall pass percentage.

The pass percentage for Class X this year was 57.39, which was 6.24 per cent more than 2018, while the pass percentage of Class XII was 74.48, which was 10.24 per cent more than last year.

“The idea is to know whether the students are just passing or are also getting good marks,” said a senior official of the education department.

For Class X, Palwal district had the poorest performance with an average percentage of just 35.91 percentage, followed by Yamunanagar at 37.83 and Faridabad at 39.30.

Rewari was the best performer at an average percentage of 52.11, followed by Jhajjar at 50.71 and Mahendragarh at 50.38.

For Class XII result, too, Palwal and Yamunanagar are the worst performers.

Palwal had an average percentage of 46.48, followed by Yamunanagar at 47.31 and Gurugram at 50.68.

At an average percentage of 57.20, Jind performed best, followed by Hisar at 56.54 and Fatehabad at 56.27.

On evaluating the average marks for the first time, the outgoing Additional Chief Secretary, School Education, PK Das, said: “We need to have a state target for an average score based on which we need to give targets to schools .This will make the evaluation process objective and quantifiable.”

Das added: “The same exercise will be conducted for subject-wise average marks. This will also give us details about the region-wise performance of the students. Training and monitoring can then become more focused.”
