Festivities galore in UT of Ladakh

The entire Ladakh, including Zanaskar and Bodh Kharbu in Kargil, is in a festive spirit after being declared the Union Territory (UT).
The main event ‘Ladakh dPal-rNgam-Duston’ was held in Leh town on Friday. A large number of residents came forward to be a part of an annual function.
The daylong event which commenced from Leh Palace, presented a glimpse of kingdoms of Ladakh. Traditional rituals and folk dance, including ‘Shondol’ dance was presented.
The procession passed through the streets of Leh market and Union Territory Memorial Park. The event concluded at NDS Ground under the chairmanship of Lieutenant-Governor Radha Krishan Mathur.
A 14-ft high bronze statue of King Senggey Namgyal was unveiled at Leh- Manali highway and Leh-Srinagar national highway junction. The statue has been designed by Tsering Gurmet from Kyungyam village and is financed by the Hemis Monastery.
The Ladakh dPal-rNgam Tuston award was conferred upon former MP Thuptsan Chhewang by the L-G. Member of three martyrs, including Nawang , Dorje and Stobdan, who sacrificed their lives during the 1989 agitation in support of the UT were also honoured.
