Kaithal, February 22
A drain located in the north of Kaithal town along NH-65 is in bad shape and remains choked with grass and silt. Thanks to the apathy of the officials of the state Irrigation Department and HUDA.
The Irrigation Department did not carry any desilting to make the drain safe and ensure flow of water. On the other hand, the pumping of waste water from HUDA sectors has left the area stinking and polluted.
When contacted, Paramjeet Singh, executive engineer, Irrigation, said the drain was cleaned last year but not this year. To improve drainage and save the town from flood fury, the department had spent crores on stone pitching over three years ago. But after that, no steps had been taken to ensure maintenance of the project.
In the past few years, the sewage water of HUDA sectors 19 and 20 is being pumped in to the drain. Owing to the apathy of the departments concerned, this huge drain has been converted into a nullah. It has not only become a health hazard, but has also turned out to be big nuisance for residents. YM Mehra, executive engineer, HUDA, said the process to lay a sewer pipeline was under way and as soon as it becomes functional, the department would stop pumping sewer in the drain.
