Faridkot, June 30
Only 706 aspirants have passed the Punjab Para Medical Entrance Test (PPMET) conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) on June 28 for the over 5,000 nursing courses seats in the 109 nursing colleges in Punjab.
As many as 4,241 intermediate students had taken the test. To qualify, general category students had to secure a minimum of 280 marks out of 800. For reserved category SC/BC students, the qualifying marks were 240.
With only 706 candidates qualifying in the entrance test, the filling of the remaining seats has become a headache for the management of the 109 nursing colleges.
It is quite shocking that a student scoring 54 per cent marks in PPMET-2015 is the state topper and the students who got 52.5 per cent and 51 per cent marks, respectively, got the second and third positions in the state.
Dental education no better
Over 38 per cent final-year dental (BDS) students have failed in their annual exam this year. The BFUHS had prepared the BDS final-year result for 2015 this week.
The pass percentage of BDS final-year students in 15 dentals college of the state was 61.5 per cent.
The remaining 38 per cent final-year students have to take and pass supplementary exams in the next year to get their BDS degree.
Some dental colleges in Punjab are imparting very poor education to their students because of a lack of infrastructure and qualified teachers, said Dr Raj Bahadur, vice-chancellor, BFUHS. During a surprise inspection by BFUHS in a dental college running post-graduate courses near Chandigarh, five heads of departments were found absent, said the VC.
