Q. Could you please explain the procedure for changing my name and date of birth in the certificate issued by CBSE?

A. The name of the candidate/father/mother/ guardian once entered in the Board’s record can be changed at any stage while studying in classes IX, X, XI, XII or thereafter (within a period of 10 years from the date of issue of the first document).

Want to go abroad after BCom

Q .I am in the first year of my BCom programme. What can I do after completing my graduation and what are the options available for going abroad?

A. Start by thinking about which field or career you aspire to specialise in, then analyse your strengths, personality and academic abilities to see where a good fit emerges. Your BCom programme will provide a good base for a range of careers. These are broadly of two types — those related to business and finance, and the non-finance fields.

While pursuing your BCom (or after), you can look at the whole gamut of finance and commerce options open to you — right from CA / CS / CWA to careers in banking and finance, insurance, investment, trading, consulting, stock market, equity research and financial analysis, financial planning, risk management, etc. Some of the courses that you could consider after completing your graduation are MCom, Master’s in Business Economics, Masters in Finance & Control, and Master’s in International Business, in addition to the ever popular and evergreen MBA. In addition, international professional certifications / qualifications such as CFA, CIMA, and CFP can also be pursued right here in India. These are highly regarded by Indian and international employers.

Non-finance options include careers in marketing, HR, retail, marketing communications, advertising, law etc. Also, careers in government services, media, research and teaching are also open to you.

The eventual choice should be made keeping in mind your individual preference and your abilities and personality. As for options abroad, all the above mentioned courses and qualifications are available at foreign universities as well with perhaps slight changes in nomenclature. As for International certifications / qualifications (CFA, CIMA, CFP), there’s no distinction. Is BEd a good option for me?

Q. I have done my MA in political science, but now I am confused whether I should do BEd or MBA. My English is not good, which is necessary for doing MBA. So is BEd a better option for me? — Umesh Pandey

A. Given that MBA admissions are now more or less over for the next academic session and require considerable preparation to score well enough to get into a decent B-School, a BEd may be more doable.

Typically, selection to BEd courses is on the basis of an entrance exam. After that you need to clear the CTET — particularly if you wish to teach in any good school (including all government schools).

What you can do is start teaching in school after completing your BEd and subsequently, give MBA a shot — a couple of years down the line after you’ve improved your communication skills etc. You may even decide to go for a specialised MBA in Education Management if you like. If you continue to enjoy teaching, you can do your MA via distance learning alongside, which will enable you to teach senior classes (Class 11-12) as a post graduate teacher in a higher pay scale.

Future in gaming for commerce student

Q. I am in Class XII (commerce+maths). I am interested in gaming and game programming. Which courses should I opt for?  — Tarun Rajpal

A. Hardcore game engine and programme design relies heavily on maths and physics. Since you’re a commerce student you may be somewhat at a disadvantage here. But don’t lose hope, all is not lost. Since you fortunately have maths as a subject, you can pursue a BCA or BSC-IT for starters. If not, go down the NIIT or NIELIT (earlier, DOEACC) route and start with their foundation program, working your way up as you gain competence. Details: www.nielit.in.

Several private institutes offer short-term courses/diplomas in gaming related areas - game design, gaming & programming, etc.

I would suggest you take up these courses alongside your graduation. This will give you a ‘feel’ for the area and also test you suitability and interest. Some of the full -time programmes can even be taken up AFTER completing your graduation. Increasingly games are being developed as apps and for casual playing on our mobile phones and tablet screens, and even online. A lot of these games rely more on an interesting or topical idea and good execution (visuals).

Incidentally this is also the fastest growing segment. You can enter the gaming industry from an animation and design perspective as well.
