Former Chief Minister and NC chief Farooq Abdullah today said divisive politics could endanger the social fabric, cause disenchantment among people and vitiate communal harmony.

“The nation and the state cannot afford division between communities as they can prosper only when people of all faiths and regions get a fair deal and equal treatment in all spheres,” he said while interacting with party functionaries at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here this morning.

The party rank and file gave an affectionate reception to the former Chief Minister on his arrival at the party headquarters. He was accompanied by former Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah.

Besides NC provincial president Devender Singh Rana, former ministers and senior party leaders were among the prominent party functionaries present during the interaction.

Farooq hoped that myopic tendencies of dividing society on the basis of caste, creed, region or religion would fall frail before the strength of people’s commitment to amity and brotherhood. In this context, he referred to the role of the NC in fomenting amity and fighting divisive tendencies.

“The NC is a movement which has taken everyone all along and never differentiated between people on the basis of region or religion. Therefore, it is incumbent upon its entire cadre to rise above politics and work for the overall betterment of the state,” he maintained.

He exhorted workers to feel the pulse of people and agitate for their problems in appropriate forums so that timely redress was sought. He said the biggest legacy of the NC was unity and amity, which had to be maintained and preserved at all costs.

Farooq exuded confidence that the NC would bounce back with rejunevated vigour and spelt out a big role for the cadre in making the party more vibrant and responsive to needs of the people.

He said a blend of the old and the young would enable the NC to bounce back in a big way and recalled how the party had surmounted challenges during testing times in the past.
