Backroom parleys have been started by political parties to catch winning candidates in municipal council (MC) elections in Bhiwani to secure the post of chairperson.

Though political parties have not contested the poll on their symbols, the stakes are high for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Congress and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) are trying to ensure their hold over the civic body after taking the winning candidates on board.

Sources said state BJP leaders had asked local leaders to get in touch with winning candidates and sought a list of those candidates expected to repose faith in the party’s policies.

Among the winners were Congress supporters and INLD-supported candidates, who could make an attempt to garner a majority in the newly elected MC to secure the post of chairperson.

Among prominent BJP-supported members are Munia Tanwar, sister of outgoing MC chairperson Bhawani Singh, Mukesh Raheja and Jyoti Tanwar.

INLD supporter Vijay Panchgawa and Congress-backed Mamanchand are expected to stake their respective claims to head the local body.

Polling went off peacefully with 68.6 per cent voters exercising their franchise. Voting started around 8 am in all 100 polling booths for 31 wards amid heavy security.

Voting percentage was 35 per cent by the afternoon. It picked pace in the afternoon with voters reaching polling booths in large numbers.

The administration had deputed 16 patrol parties and six Deputy Superintendents of Police with personnel under their command to keep a strict vigil on the process.
