Chandigarh, February 9

MP Kirron Kher today took up the domicile issue while seeking government jobs in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking during the Zero Hour, Kher said according to the Punjab Reorganisation Act of 1966, residents of Punjab and Haryana get 60 per cent and 40 per cent jobs in the Chandigarh Administration respectively. But, when the people of Chandigarh applied for jobs in Punjab and Haryana, they were required to produce domicile certificates in the two states. This was unfair because the domicile certificates were demanded from those people who lived in the capital of the two states, she said.

She said people of Chandigarh should be allowed to get jobs in Punjab and Haryana without being asked to provide a domicile certificate. This was a long-pending demand of the residents of Chandigarh. Chandigarh being a small UT has limited number of posts in government departments. Consequently, fewer opportunities are here for the job seekers. Under the existing practice, the job seekers of the city are bearing irreparable loss . The job aspirants of the city should not be discriminated in the matter of employment, particularly when they are residing in the capital of Punjab and Haryana, Kher said.

Had written to Punjab and Haryana CMs

Before taking up the issue in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Kher had also written letters to the Punjab and Haryana governments to change the eligibility rules in their respective states for job aspirants of Chandigarh. In separate letters addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Kher has advocated the need to allow the job aspirants of Chandigarh to apply against the posts advertised by the governments of Punjab and Haryana. She had requested the Chief Ministers of both the states to look into the matter personally and allow the job aspirants of Chandigarh to apply against the posts advertised by the governments of Punjab and Haryana.
