Putting an end to the speculation over the nomination of the Congress candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Uttarakhand, the Congress party high command has announced Pradeep Tamta, a former Lok Sabha MP from Almora, as its candidate.
The announcement of Tamta was made along with other party candidates by the Congress in New Delhi today. Pradeep Tamta, a former legislator, had also won the 2009 Lok Sabha poll from Almora but lost the 2014 poll to BJP’s Ajay Tamta.
Pradeep Tamta, a statehood fighter, is considered close to Chief Minister Harish Rawat. It was believed that Harish Rawat played a prominent role in getting the party nomination for Pradeep Tamta. Many party candidates, including Congress chief Kishore Upadhaya had been lobbying hard to get the Rajya Sabha seat which will fall vacant following the retirement of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Vijay on July 4.
