Separatist leader Geelani calls for complete shutdown of Valley

Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday called for complete shutdown in Kashmir to observe death anniversary of Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was executed for masterminding militant attack on Parliament in New Delhi.

hops, public transport, and other business establishments remained closed in the city and other district headquarters of the Valley while traffic remained off roads in Srinagar as well as other parts of the valley.

Para military forces and police have been deployed in many sensitive areas and minor restrictions have also been imposed in some police stations of old town.

Afzal Guru, a resident of Sopore, was hanged on February 9, 2013, for his involvement in the 2001 Parliament attack.

Meanwhile, authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar on Monday to thwart separatist protests.

The authorities imposed restrictions in five police station areas of Khanyar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Rainawari and Safa Kadal to maintain law and order.

Restrictions have also been imposed in parts of Maisuma locality following call for protest and shutdown by separatist leaders.

Contingents of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of Srinagar city and other major towns of the Kashmir Valley.

Attendance in government offices, banks and post offices was also adversely affected because of non-availability of public transport.

No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far, a senior police officer said.

Authorities have placed some senior separatist leaders under house arrest in Srinagar to maintain law and order.
