Among several first timers, Devender Chaudhary, son of local MP Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar, is also trying his luck in the Municipal Corporation elections to be held on January 8.

While the BJP and the BSP are contesting the elections on the party symbol, the Congress and the INLD have decided to extend external support to their candidates.

“The BJP has fielded its candidates on all 40 seats and it is confident of getting a majority in the House,” claimed a spokesman of the party. The party had won only four out of 35 seats in the last elections held in 2010. The BSP has already released a list of 17 candidates.

Though Tuesday is the last date to file nomination papers, candidates and their supporters have already started campaigning in their respective wards.

On campaigning, Vikram Gaur, a senior functionary of the BJP, said: “The party is yet to finalise a list of its star campaigners,” said. He said Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar was likely to campaign in a majority of the wards. The candidates were free to invite celebrities, but they would have to bear the cost on their own, he said, adding that real campaign would take off after December 29.

Stating that the expense limit of Rs 2.10 lakh was an issue, Danesh Adhlakha, the BJP candidate from ward 33, said he would have to depend on the party leaders for campaigning.

State BJP chief Subhash Barala who was here today said that national or state-level leaders would be available for campaigning only at the request of the candidates. Ruling out dissidence as a major issue, he said the party had adopted unbiased approach while giving tickets to the candidates.
