Change of pattern of SSC exam

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has declared major changes in the format for its Combined Graduate Level examination for the year 2016.

For the first time, SSC will conduct online examinations — a major departure from its pen-and-paper-based examination policy. There are also major changes in the examination pattern with regard to the number of questions. 

There is a considerable amount of anxiety among students because of these unexpected changes. We  clarify your doubts related to the online examination and changed pattern.

SSC has declared that the new format will have 4 tiers:

Tier 1: The first tier will consist of a total 100 questions with 25 questions each from General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension section. Each right answer will award the candidate 2 marks and each wrong answer will attract a penalty of 0.5 marks. Time allotted for this section is 75 minutes.

Tier 2: This tier will have 100 questions of 2 marks each from Quantitative Aptitude section and 200 question of 1 mark each from English section. Wrong answers will attract a penalty of 0.5 & 0.25 eachfor the Quantitative Aptitude and English section respectively.

Tier 3: The Commission has also decided to introduce a Descriptive Paper as Tier 3. The Question Paper will be bilingual and candidates will have the option to choose any one medium to answer, English or Hindi. This paper will test candidates' proficiency in Essay, Precis, Letter and Application Writing etc. This will be a paper-based examination of 60 minutes with a maximum award of 100 marks.

Tier 4: Tier 4 examination will only be conducted for those candidates who are applying for selected posts. It consists of a Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) and a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT). The final merit list will be prepared based on the overall performance in Tiers-I, II and III. However, the candidate will also need to qualify all the 3 tiers separately. There will be no sectional cut-off in any of the tiers. Document Verification will also be conducted as per the provisions of the notice of examination.
